This easy-to-make cup rug will brighten your mornings and save tablecloths. Use scraps of 4-ply washable yarn and a Size H hook.

To Make a Shell: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

For Beginning Shell: Ch 3, 1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

RUG BASE

With choice of color, chain 6, join to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 3. make 17 dc in ring.  Join with sl st to top of ch-3.  (8dc in ring).    

Rnd 2: * Ch 5, sl st in next dc. Repeat from * around. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: With another color yarn, Join in any ch-5 loop, work 3 sc in same loop. * Ch 2, skip next lp, 3 sc in next lp. Repeat from * around, ch 2. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Work sc in same st, continue working sc in each sc, with 2 sc in each ch 2 to end of the round. Join with sl st. Fasten off color. 

RUG BASE:  Join different color of yarn in any free loop. 

Rnd 5: Work Beg. Shell in same loop. * Work Shell in next free lp. Repeat from * around, sl st in top of Ch-3, sl st in next dc, sl st in ch-1 sp to join. Fasten off. (9 Shells made).

Rnd 6:  Join another color yarn in same space as joining. work in pattern of 9 shells as in Rnd 5. Join with sl st in next dc,

Rnd 7: Ch 3, work 2 dc in same space, * 3 dc in next sp.

Repeat from * around, DO NOT JOIN, Fasten off.

FOR TIE:  With any color, ch 15, sl st in top of ch-3 of last rnd, sc in each dc, ch 15.  Fit over bottom of coffee mug, tie ch 15 through handle.
